Ideal Weight for Men by Age: 20s Through 70s

The BMI 18.5–24.9 band applies to healthy adult men from 20 through the mid-60s. What changes with age is body composition, not the range itself — until you cross 65.

The muscle problem

Men lose roughly 3–8% of muscle mass per decade after 30, faster after 60. Same weight, less muscle, more fat.

That's why two men at 5'10" and 175 lbs can look and function completely differently at 30 vs 65. Resistance training slows this.

After 65

BMI up to ~27 is protective. Being underweight after 65 is a stronger risk factor than being modestly overweight.
