How to Calculate BMI by Hand

BMI = weight ÷ height². Metric: kg / m². Imperial: (lbs / in²) × 703. Both give the same number.

The categories

Under 18.5: underweight. 18.5–24.9: healthy. 25.0–29.9: overweight. 30.0+: obese.

These come from the WHO and are used by the CDC and NHS.

Worked example

5'7" (67 in), 160 lbs: (160 / 67²) × 703 = 25.1 — just into the overweight band. WHtR and body fat can tell you if that's meaningful or a muscle artifact.
