BMI vs Waist-to-Height Ratio: Use Both, Not Either

There is no single "best" body metric. BMI and waist-to-height ratio measure different things, and the strongest research supports using both.

Where each one wins

BMI wins for population screening and setting a weight target. It's cheap, universal, and validated on millions.

WHtR wins for spotting central (visceral) fat — the kind linked to heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Someone with a "normal" BMI and a WHtR over 0.5 ("skinny fat") still carries elevated cardiometabolic risk.

The two-number check

BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. WHtR under 0.5. Green on both = you're in a healthy zone across the metrics that matter.

Green on one and red on the other is the most useful signal — it tells you exactly what to work on.
